KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES! MONSTERS FROM THE ID is Fresh from its World Premiere at this year's SOUTH BY SOUTH WEST FILM FESTIVAL!

The awesome threat of the idealistic hope of the ATOMIC AGE of the 1950's fueled a boom of science fiction films that made heroes out of scientists and got a generation of kids to look up to them like matinee cowboy idols. We belived we could conquer all unknowns and insure a bright future. Even with all the fantasy and fakery, these films fueled minds that made powerful advances for the world--We put a man on the moon and won the cold war.

Today--We need more scientists to save us from the enviromental and economic disasters that threaten the planet. We need another Gee Whiz Golden Age of Cheesy Monster Movies to save the world!

MR. LOBO hopes you'll join him for this Heady Nostalgic Freefall through FORBIDDEN PLANET, THEM!, THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE, DESTINATION MOON, CONQUEST OF SPACE, ROCKETSHIP X-M, INVADERS FROM MARS, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, EARTH VS. Update 1/22/09

Horror Host Legend Bob Wilkins Passes

Mr. Lobo's greatest hero, the great TV personality Bob Wilkins, most famous for the "Creature Features" show he produced and hosted in the Bay Area, died Jan 7th 2009 in his sleep surrounded by loved ones hat the age of 76 after a long bout with Alzheimer's disease.

Bob Wilkins was a encouraging friend, a teacher and a surrogate father to many of us.

There is a wonderful slideshslide show at bobwilkins.net accompanied by this letter from webmaster Scott Moon on Bob's famous cigar letterhead.

Dear Friends,

On January 7, 2009, Bob Wilkins passed away peacefully. As many of you know, Bob had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for the past several years and his family appreciates the concern, thoughts and prayers from his friends and fans.

When I first met Bob in 1995, he was still at the top of his game. Since then, I've been designing and maintaining his official website, and even produced (along with Mr. Lobo) two live Creature Features events in Sacramento. Its been an honor and a privilege to not only work with Bob, but to become friends with him and his family.

You can email your condolences to scottmoon@scottmoon.net and I will pass them along to the Wilkins family.

- Scott Moon

"Wilkins is survived by his wife,Sally, of Reno, and children, Rob of Oakland and Nancy Fitzpatrick of Sacramento..."

The memorial service Jan. 24 at Oakland.s Montclair Presbyterian Church is for close friends and family only, there will be a memorial and tribute in February for his legions of fans.

Mr. Lobo had this to say about Bob...

"I was a very timid kid, easily scared and nightmare prone due to an overactive imagination. I would have to hide in the other room when "Gilligan" would get yelled at by "The Skipper" on afternoon TV. My dad watched The Bob Wilkins Show in Sacramento and Creature Features out of SF if the wind was blowing right and we cranked the antenna the right direction. Laying on the floor next to his La-Z-Boy recliner was one of my only opportunities to bond with my emotionally detached father. Bob was always a calming low key-presence amid the mayhem and murder of the films he showed. I'd peek out from under the coffee table in my Spider-man PJ's as a lad when he'd come back on the screen and he's crack some dry joke or talk about STAR WARS...and I knew that everything was okay. Wearing a suit and a striped tie, Wilkins seemed like a kind school teacher and was by most accounts an unlikely TV star. He was pale with sandy blond hair, short in stature, a skinny build, and wore horn-rimmed or "birth control" glasses as they're called in the army. He wasn't a hipster or a sportscaster in a bad Dracula costume. Wilkins seemed "cool" to kids by not seeming to care if he was "cool".

He was my guide, my safety net and his demeanor gave me the courage to explore boundless worlds of fantasy. He gave me the biggest "A-HA!" moment of my young life. The stuff happening in the little window called TV wasn't just pouring into the house...it was being presented for fun. A present for me from a friend that wants to entertain me! It's all a show made by people not unlike myself. It was that idea that encouraged me to make things with my overactive imagination and reach out rather than be an terrified introvert my whole life.

I met Bob in person in 1998, I helped produce a live Creature Features show in Sacramento with Scott Moon and wrote some material for Bob. He encouraged me to do this sort of thing myself. In 2001 I had my break and made a show called Cinema Insomnia for a KXTV 10 in Sacramento. Bob wrote the station and told them to keep me on the air...told them that "my show was the best thing going".

Over the years bob gave me tons of advice...until alzheimers took his mind away from us and ultimatelly his life.

There would be no Cinema Insomnia without Bob.

He was a guide and influence for so many. He has brought much joy to my life. I will never forget him or the lessons he taught me. Bob's suffering is finally over...my thoughts now are with his many many children out there who watched him shine in the dark every Saturday night.

Wondercon will be screening "Watch Horror Films, Keep America Strong" on Friday, February 27th at 5:30PM at the Moscone Center in a main screening room.

The documentary will be available for purchase on DVD all weekend at the "Creatures at Large" table, where John Stanley, Bob Shaw, Tom Wyrsh, Ernie Fosselius, and Myself will be avaible to share memories and sign autographs. In addition to that we will have our Creatures At Large panel on Sunday March 1st at 3:00-4:00 PM. Our panel will be "A Tribute to Bob Wilkins"

A lot of fans have asked if the "Hope" poster I designed is available. If you'd like a signed print Paypal $10 to erik@fal.net.

B-MOVIE CELEBRATION IN FRANKLIN: GROUND ZERO FOR B-CULTURE

The Camelot couple of B-culture is extremely proud to host THE 2008 B-MOVIE CELEBRATION. Earlier this year, The Queen organized an art show to help the hometown of the event with a flood relief benefit called THE AMAZING COLOSSAL ART SHOW and the remaining items will be sold at auction as part of the opening festivities. The people of Franklin are eager to receive their THE QUEEN OF TRASH--Banners bearing her image attacking the ARTCRAFT theater as THE 50FT. WOMAN flutter all over town!

On September 26th, 27th and 28th THE B-MOVIE CELEBRATION has a whopping 50 films programmed all over Franklin, Indiana including DEATH RACE 2000, HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, THIS ISLAND EARTH, TARANTULA, CARNIVAL OF SOULS, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, NIGHT OF THE COMET, BEYOND THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS, THE GIANT BEHEMOTH, QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE, WORLD WITHOUT END, RUSS MEYER'S UP, FROM HELL IT CAME, NOT OF THIS EARTH, THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, EARTH VS. However, THE QUEEN OF TRASH and MR. LOBO will mainly be at the beautiful and historic ARTCRAFT Theatre, introducing practically all of the films presented there, interviewing special guests, giving out prizes, encouraging audience participation, and greeting B-Movie fans from all over the country and abroad.

Last year, Mr. Lobo and The Queen had a fantastic time stirring things up with directors and B-Movie greats like LLOYD KAUFMAN, TOM SAVINI, CONRAD BROOKS, and JIM WYNORSKI and this year they’re back with some famous friends. There are too many special guests and events to list them all. There will be a retrospective of The Films of JIM WYNORSKI like Miss Mitten’s favorite CHOPPING MALL. Though the miracle of modern holistic geography, we also will have THE WORLD’S LARGEST BEACH PARTY in the parking lot across the street from the ARTCRAFT where my California pals WILL THE THRILL and MONICA TIKI GODDESS will be presenting “ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS” and rock to the beat of the schlock rock combo THE MOON RAYS! GOODBYE KTEH

It is with a heavy heart that we must bring you this news.
Ken Patterson from KTEH Programming, who stuck his neck out and took a chance with CINEMA INSOMNIA three years ago, has informed me that KTEH will no longer be able to air CINEMA INSOMNIA. Across the country the status of broadcast TV is grim and stations are scrambling to give the sponsors they still have more for their money and to get more from the programming they acquire. In the case of KTEH, it was decided that late night programming will now be a repeat of 7PM to Midnight prime programming that will air from 1 AM to 6 AM.  Starting in October they not facilitate ANY independent scheduling of programs in that time period. This is across all of the channels operated by KTEH and KQED, and was decided well above the programming department level.  Fortunately you, the loyal SLEEPLESS KNIGHTS OF INSOMNIA, have come through with DVD, 8x10 and T-shirt purchases, and support at live appearances. Over the past 3 years, it has been Mr. Lobo’s honor and delightful duty to bring a "CREATURE FEATURES" type show to the Bay Area and you are the number 1 reason CINEMA INSOMNIA exists at all. MR. LOBO hopes you come see him at one of the many live events he will be appearing at during the holiday/horrorday season. Perhaps together we can explore new ways of spreading the joy of misunderstood films in the future..."for that is where you and I will be spending the reat of our lives".

Hope is not lost.

Jonathan Morken of APPREHENSIVE FILMS and CREATURE FEATURES maven Tom Wyrcsh have informed us that talks have begun with San Francisco Independent stations TV20 and KRON Ch. 4 in regards to finding a new local home for Mr. Lobo and Cinema Insomnia.

The final show for CINEMA INSOMNIA on KTEH will air late-late Saturday night/Sunday Morning, 9/28, and will be the Live DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS Special (2.5 hour long edit...)

Insomniacs are encouraged to contact their favorite TV stations and networks and tell them, “I want my CI!” and why!

SILICON 2008 PRESENTS LOBOTRONIX FILM SHOW IN SAN JOSE!

This would be a great event for orphaned KTEH CINEMA INSOMNIA fans to meet and plot the coming revolution.

SILICON presents
THE LOBOTRONIX FILM SHOW
(AKA Cinema Insomnia Live)

One night only, On Friday October 3rd THE LOBOTRONIX FILM SHOW promises a monstrously good and dangerously retro time, from 8:30 to 11:30 in the Siskiyou Ballroom/Donnor Pass Ballroom DOUBLETREE HOTEL , San Jose.

Hosted by TV's MR. LOBO and The QUEEN OF TRASH from CINEMA INSOMNIA, THE LOBOTRONIX FILM SHOW, showcases a parade of bizarre short films, monster movie trailers, vintage commercials, and twisted cartoons that might otherwise go unseen by mainstream audiences. This event features the convention classic STAR TREK bloopers,  a rare ABBOTT AND COSTELLO skit where they meet an all together  different Universal monster, classic GUMBY shorts, the timely BETTY BOOP for President, a plethora of Sci -Fi and Horror film trailers, and many many weird and wonderful surprises. Actual 16mm film clips(not DVD or video) will be provided by prominent Northern California film collectors "SCI-FI BOB" EKMAN and PAUL ETCHEVERRY, who have put on "Psychotronic"-style film shows since the 1970's mostly in the San Francisco Bay Area and most notably, producers for the infamous PYSCHOTRONIX benifit film shows for KFJC at FOOTHILL COLLEGE in Los Altos. These and other recent shows with this type of programming in Sacramento, Castro Valley, San Francisco, Oakland and El Cerrito quickly sold out! This event promises to be fantastic with an earlier start time, free admission included for SILICON attendees and you could even win prizes from MR. LOBO and THE QUEEN OF TRASH!

To further help with donations, The Q-o-T has rallied her artsy-type pals in Sacramento and elsewhere to donate artwork for: The AMAZING COLOSSAL ART SHOW ! It is a "B-Movie"-themed art sale to benefit the flood victims in Franklin, IN, home of the Midwest's annual "B-Movie Celebration." The event will be hosted by the Queen of Trash, with an appearance by Mister Lobo!

Just think: rubber monsters, zombies, go-go girls, Mexican wrestlers, space girls in silver bikinis, paper plate saucers, giant robots, brains in jars, kung fu masters, death cars radioactive insects and, of course, amazing colossal people!

Here's the best part: ALL of the pieces will be very affordable (most under $100) and the majority will be $50 and under! The very air will abound with one of a kind, art, jewelry and trinkets that won't put a dent in your wallet!

WE STILL NEED DONATIONS! There is still plenty of room for more art donations, so if you're interested, please e-mail the Queen  (queen-of-trash@hotmail.com) and let her know. We are also in the market for a couple of sponsors to offset the venue fee and to provide some snackage, so if you know of some folks, please pass it on.

100% of profits will benefit the Johnson County Flood Relief Fund.*

The show will be on Saturday, July 19th, 6pm – 10pm

It will be held at: Vox Gallery Sacramento
Corner of X & 19th
Sacramento, CA  95818

Also, The deadline is coming up for the Horror Filmmaker Challenge: to film The Final 5 Minutes of a Slasher/Zombie Film. as always for info go to sachorrorfilmfest.com.

B-MOVIE CELLEBRATION 2008 UPDATE

As you know, Mr. Lobo and The Queen of Trash will be hosting the big event September 26th,27th, and 28th in Indiana, with some help from their Thrillville pals Will "The Thrill" and Monica Tiki Goddess and last year's MC Papaw Payatte. They'll also be shooting new material for the launch of The B-Movie Channel powered by Digiflick. Below is the poster designed by Mr. Lobo with our very own Queen Of Trash as the 50 ft. Woman!

On a serious note: The Queen of Trash and I are very concerned about the recent flooding in Franklin and they send their sincerest and deepest sympathies. We are so proud of the bravery, compassion, and comradeship they have showed in this disaster! These are the same fine qualities that made us love the people of Franklin and the surrounding areas so much n the first place. It is also this spirit of co-operation, determination, community, and survival in the face of the most unforgiving odds that embodies the core ethic of why we love B-films. Think of George Romero and Ed Wood and how they brought their respective communities together and made history. This is another reason why Franklin is the perfect place for THE B-MOVIE CELEBRATION.

Our thoughts are with them. But, thoughts and prayers come cheap. The Celebration will go on as planned. Though the Ashley Drake, the bed and breakfast where specials guests like Tom Savini stayed had been decimated the beautiful Artcraft theatre, The Museum  and The Willard survived intact. A great way to actually help the good people of that Indiana town is to be there in September for the festival…stay for a few nights, have a few drinks, buy your popcorn, and watch B-films with the folks who put the heart in heartland. If that is not a possibility.. you can always make donations via paypal as well!

The Plan to Remake Plan 9

Set you Dictorobator for 9/09/09. The darling of direct to video splatter Jonny Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment is remaking Ed Wood's classic B-film as a serious and scary effort. Scripted by Johnson and Walt Winfrey,  it’s set to shoot in Virginia next March, and premiere the following September 9—or 9/9/09—for the first film’s 50th anniversary. Casting is currently underway, with Johnson himself, Mr. Lobo as a later day Criswell, YouTube personality Caitlin Hill (a.k.a. Hill88) and original cast member Conrad Brooks already set for roles.

According to Fangoria.com, Johnson intends to release his PLAN 9 in a two-DVD set with Wood’s movie, on which he and Brooks will do a new audio commentary, plus a retrospective piece and more. You can find out more about the project at its website www.plan9movie.com.

Psychotronic Film Festival

If you haven't yet seen it, this may be your last chance for awhile since they are remodeling Foothill College!  For over 15 years the KFJC Psychotronix Film Festival

has delivered only the most unintentionally hilarious 1950's commercials and "educational" films, the most bizarre obscure classic cartoons, trailers from the worst movies, the most double-entendre packed Pre-Code shorts, the cheapest international monster movies, the campiest musical shorts, the most surreal silent movie clips and TV programs that should never have aired. Radio personality Rob Emmett of  "The Norman Bates Memorial Soundtrack Show" hosts this fundraiser for KFJC from 7:00 to 11:30 PM at Room 5015 on the Foothill College campus, Los Altos Hills, El Monte exit off of Highway 280. Bring $5 Donation and eight quarters for parking. For more info visit Psychotronic Paul’s Blog. Mr. Lobo and The Queen Of Trash will be there live and in person.

WATCH HORROR FILMS-KEEP AMERICA STRONG!

Bob Wilkins was a beloved local television presenter with enormous impact in the sci-fi, horror and genre film fan community. The show he created Creature features spanned from 1971 to 84 with the help of his successor John Stanley. John was a bay area film critic and wrote the horror host bible and koran "The Creature Features Movie Guide" and "I Was A TV Horror Host". He took over for wilkins in 1979. He is active in the fan community today. However, Wilkins, 76, has Alzheimer's disease, and has been placed in a care home in Sacramento. A loss for the Wilkins family, which includes two children and two grandchildren, but also a loss for Bay Area television and horror fans scattered across the US.

Many of us carry a little bit of Bob Wilkins around with us every day and the spirit of what he created lives on in many mysterious ways. There is now a new way to relive the days of Creature Features, thanks to Tom Wyrsch, a monster kid turned archivist from Petaluma who is preserving the show's memory and helping the Wilkins family.

Wyrsch has produced "Watch Horror Films: Keep America Strong," a loving and very entertaining 80-minute documentary on the "Creature Features" legacy and its two hosts. "Watch Horror Films: Keep America Strong" debuted May 15 with two packed showings at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland. Mr. Lobo is going to help Mr. Wyrsch find other theaters to around Northern California including Sacramento, where Bob hosted horror films from 1966-1982.

The documentary will be available for purchase on DVD as well as presented upcoming episode of Cinema Insomnia. All of the money helping Wilkins' family cope with his sizable medical costs of Bob's care. If you loved "Creature Features" please donate to the Bob Wilkins Foundation by visiting www.bobwilkins.net.

Mr. Lobo will be helping Will present the August 3rd showing at The Cerrito Theatre in El Cerrito.

Last year’s midnight Lobotronic at the Studio Theater in Sacramento quickly sold out! Because the crowd was so enthusiastic, the 2-hour show was spontaneously extended to 4 hours. Even at 4 AM the audience was still crying for more! This year’s event promises to be even better with an earlier start time and 3 rooms of entertainment! In addition, this year’s event will be held at Willemina’s fabulous Restaurant and Bar in Old Sacramento, which offers, in addition to a full bar, an extensive menu of creative deep fried food, like the deep fried pizza, the deep fried pickle, and the amazing “Scotch Egg!” which is a hard boiled egg covered in sausage, breaded and deep fried!

The “Lobotronic Film Show” will be hosted by Nationally Syndicated Horror Host, Mr. Lobo and the Cult Sensation and Comic Book heroine, The Queen of Trash! This formidable couple has also signed on to host the upcoming Sacramento Horror Film Festival at the Colonial Theater this Fall. The Sacramento Horror Film Festival will also feature a Lobotronic Film Show as part of its programing.

One night only! The “Lobotronic Film Show” starts at 9pm on Thursday, June 7th, at Willemina’s Restaurant and Bar (1023 Front Street, Old Sacramento). 21 and over only. The admission is $8. All proceeds will go to support the inaugural year of The Sacramento's Horror Film Festival in October. Come out and support Sacramento’s esoteric cinema scene!
